Pinched Nerves

Pinched nerves can cause a lot of pain and discomfort. In most cases, this is a temporary condition. The chiropractors at Adjusting the World Chiropractic in Rock Hill can help relieve the discomfort and get you back to being active in a shorter period of time when compared to just letting the injury heal on its own.

What is a Pinched Nerve?

When muscles and bones become swollen, they can press on any nerves in the area. A herniated disc in the back will often put pressure on the surrounding nerves. Sometimes repetitive action will eventually cause swelling in joints, as does arthritis. All of these conditions press against the surrounding nerves, not giving them freedom of movement. The nerve sends a message to the brain that something is wrong and the brain reacts by sending out signals of distress. These signals are pain and other discomforts.

A pinched nerve can cause sharp pain. Other signs include weakness in certain areas, such as the ability to grasp an object or a feeling of tingling like the pins and needles you feel when your feet fall asleep. In any case, the feeling produced is very irritating and can cause worry.

Treatment for a Pinched Nerve

Very often, the pinched nerve will resolve itself over time. You will need to keep the area as still as possible and reduce as much pressure as possible until it is resolved. If you don't, you risk doing permanent damage to the nerve. The doctor may immobilize the area with a splint and suggest you use either cold or heat on the area. An NSAID may be taken to ease any pain.

Visiting a chiropractor can alleviate the discomfort of a pinched nerve in a couple of ways. A whole-body massage can help relax all of your muscles. If it is a muscle pushing on the nerve, this will reduce the pressure and free the nerve. This is also the case with massaging the area around the pinched nerve. Physical therapy can also be beneficial by introducing gentle stretching that will help get any bones pressing on the nerve out of the way. Physical therapy will also assist with developing a routine that may prevent future pinched nerve events.
